エッセイ#04:The Leader Who I Admire: Changing Agent

Module 4

ファイナルエッセイとして課されたお題が、“identify a leader who you admire.”というものでした。

自分が経験してきた中で尊敬できるリーダーと、その心理面、行動面、知識面における特徴をまとめるものでした。

私の中でも良い振り返りになったので、私のあこがれのリーダーについてのエッセイを転載します。

The Leader Who I Admire: Changing Agent

A leader who I admire is my first boss of my first career. After graduating the college, I started to work at a general hospital in Japan as a quality management staff. I was assigned to be an assistant of Joint Commission International (JCI) survey project. He was the person of in charge of the project, and his position was Senior Project Manager who managed most of the huge projects. He could implement a transformational change as a changing agent. I would like to describe his characteristics as a leader and what I could learn from him.

There are three points of views about his strengths: psychologically, intellectually, and behaviorally. First of all, he is mentally tough. His motto is “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” by Margaret Mead. According to his motto, he has a passion and self-confidence to make situations better, and he can build his strong team from scratch. Secondly, as he got a Master of Healthcare Administration in the U.S., he always cares logic of the projects and its issues and also has statistical knowledge. He could drive the projects with logical reasons and quantitative numbers. Thirdly, what his noteworthy features are from the behavioral perspective. He is humble, treats people equally, and has an international point of view. With the behavioral characteristics, as he prioritizes tasks clearly, he can make a team for each project quickly and smoothly. Thanks to his leadership, the JCI project was succeeded only within one year and a half, although it usually takes more than two years for preparation. He was the best problem solver and changing agent in my career who is in step with times.

There are three lessons that I could learn from him. The first lesson is that I should prepare the countermeasures completely with a strong passion to change. Even if I have a right reason, people sometimes do not admit my proposal. The passion and the expression of emotion are needed when I lead an organization as a leader. The second lesson is that daily casual communication can make a team quickly when a problem happens. The boss treated co-workers equally and communicate with them as always if he did not have a project. The daily communication builds trust with each other, and the trust makes a strong bond as a team when we need to solve an issue. Finally, the most important lesson is that I should enjoy making situations better and appreciate what I do for others. In an organization, there are many roles: someone does routine tasks, and someone provides services. Among the functions, I should appreciate what I like to do and should be committed to what I do.

When I work at my current company as a project manager, what are important to me are openness to people and technology, honesty to team members, and toughness of my mind. The experiences with the boss sublimed my value. For the future, I need more experiences of spending with a diverse group with different values to gain self-confidence for driving any kinds of persons and for becoming a leader as changing agent.
